The author is unknown, but the poem is not. It is called "Don't Quit" and I would like to share it with you:
Don't quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes do
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill
When the funds are low and the debts are high
and you want to smile, but you have to sigh
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never know how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when thing go wrong that you must NOT quit.
A common misconception among new believers is that once born again, there are no more problems in life. Unless this error is confronted with the truth, many people fall away and quit because they don't know how to deal with tribulation, pressure and temptation. It is very important for believers to understand Hebrews 12:1:
"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses (the great examples of faith in chapter 11), let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, "
If we are going to win a race, especially a marathon, we must get rid of as much excess baggage as possible. The more weight one carries, the slower one runs and the sooner one quits
"Stuff" ends up distracting and weighing us down both physically and spiritually. To run with patience and endurance the race set before us; we MUST cast off, throw away and lay aside EVERYTHING that hinders, distracts and entangles us. If we don't, we will inevitably become either so weighed down with the matters of life or entangled in sin that we fail to finish the race or become a causality of war.
Hebrews 12:2, 3 sums up the point of this discussion:
"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God .
For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds ."
The reason for getting rid of the weight and entangling sin in our lives is so that we can run with patience the race set before us. The word patience means endurance or perseverance. The only way to win a marathon is to "hang in there" though all those grueling miles. When we are weighed down and entangled with sin, we want to quit. When we are freed from the weight of distraction and the spider web of sin; we are willing to keep going no matter how hard it gets.
We must look away from all that distracts and fix our eyes upon Jesus. He is the Leader, Author, Perfecter and Source of our faith. He is the one who knows what it takes to finish the race, for he did. Jesus was able to endure the sufferings leading up to and including the cross because of the "joy that was set before Him". That joy was the promise of the resurrection God had shown him. He knew God would raise him after three days, so that gave him what he needed to finish the race of our redemption.
The only way we can run and win this race and not grow weary, lose heart and QUIT is to fix our eyes on Jesus and consider him and all he went through for our redemption. If we look inwardly at ourselves, we will fail. If we look around us we will get distracted and fail. If we look at the problems instead of the solutions, we will fail. If we take our eyes off of Jesus and put them on the world, we will fail.
Finally, I pray that no matter how dark the days get, no matter how bad the storms blow, no matter how strong the temptation to give into the lure of pleasure becomes; we never quit. Don t quit, no matter what. Don't give in, no matter how hard. Keep your eyes on Him and He will give you the strength, to remain faithful in service and in the end--win.
